by Stockwatch Business Reporter

New York spot gold added $40.80 Thursday, pausing at $4,496.30. The TSX Venture Exchange added 19.96 points to 1,007 while the TSX gold index tacked on 12.91 points to 858.44. Most precious metals miners moved higher today. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) added $3.41 to $245.50 on 1.09 million shares and Pan American Silver Corp. (PAAS) gained $2.32 to $76.16 on 1.1 million shares. There were some laggards, of course: China Gold International Resources Corp. (CGG) dropped 50 cents to $27.38 on 85,000 shares.

A retail investor or two may have fallen prey to the risk of entering a small sell order at market with a thin trader: Perseus Mining Ltd. (PRU) traded as low as $4.71 in the opening minutes before ending the day down 18 cents to $5.04 on 94,000 shares. Perseus, which last traded that low in late March, had no news to account for its stock gapping down.

Brodie Sutherland's Tocvan Ventures Corp. (TOC) lost four cents to 61 cents on 94,000 shares on word that it has drilled three new gold and silver zones at its Gran Pilar project in Sonora, Mexico. The stepout drilling returned assays of up to 1.5 grams of gold and 25 grams of silver per tonne across 3.1 near-surface metres in an area that Tocvan unimaginatively calls New Zone 1 -- or, if you prefer a moniker that nails down the location in gory detail -- South Block El Mezquite Trend South.
