New York spot gold added -- no, wait, it was down late -- losing $77.60 to $4,252.10 by Wednesday afternoon. The TSX Venture Exchange also revered course, dropping 18.82 points to 967.12 while the TSX gold index retreated 14.79 points to 851.95. Most gold miners advanced early, but were down by the close. Artemis Gold Inc. (ARTG) was hit hard, ending the day down $3.53 to $33.71 on 1.94 million shares. It had been as high as $38.50 earlier. SSR Mining Inc. (SSRM) clung to its earlier gains, closing at $44.83, up 25 cents on 1.86 million shares.

Gilbert Clark's Meridian Mining PLC (MNO) lost just one cent to $1.73 to 960,000 shares, but it had news. Drilling at its Santa Helena zone, on its Cabacal project in Brazil, has turned up a new zone of volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralization (VMS) below and east of the Santa Helena Central zone. Drilling in the new area has produced a 7.2-metre strike averaging 1.4 grams of gold and 24.3 grams of silver per tonne, plus 0.1 per cent copper, 2.3 per cent zinc and 0.9 per cent lead.
