West Texas Intermediate crude for June delivery added 76 cents to $83.57 on the New York Merc, while Brent for June added 99 cents to $89.01 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $14.00 to WTI, down from a discount of $12.70. Natural gas for May lost one cent to $1.64. The TSX energy index added 2.11 points to close at 300.50.
Grant Fagerheim's Whitecap Resources Inc. (WCP) added 12 cents to $10.87 on 6.36 million shares, after releasing the financials for what it toasted as an "exceptional first quarter." Production came to a record 169,700 barrels of oil equivalent a day, exceeding analysts' predictions of 165,000 barrels a day. Cash flow of 64 cents a share was also ahead of analysts' predictions of 62 cents a share. On the back of a quarter that it proudly touted as "the most active in our history," Whitecap has now hiked its full-year production guidance to a range of 167,000 to 172,000 barrels a day (a 2,000-barrel-a-day increase), without touching its budget of $1-billion.
