West Texas Intermediate crude for June delivery lost $1.22 to $82.63 on the New York Merc, while Brent for June lost $1.10 to $88.40 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $12.00 to WTI, up from a discount of $13.50. Natural gas for June added 11 cents to $2.03. The TSX energy index added 1.96 points to close at 303.29.
Oil prices stumbled into the week, weighed down by Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks and dimming prospects of a near-term U.S. interest rate cut. Here in Canada, the oil patch prepared to continue the seasonal flood of financials. Companies set to publish their first quarter numbers this week include Vermilion Energy Inc. (VET: $16.60), Tourmaline Oil Corp. (TOU: $69.12), Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (CNQ: $106.83), Obsidian Energy Ltd. (OBE: $12.37) and others.
One of those others will be Cenovus Energy Inc. (CVE), up 11 cents to $29.43 on 4.83 million shares. It will release its first quarter financials on Wednesday. In the meantime, it started the week on a somewhat sour note, its name in the headlines over a $2.5-million fine for an oil spill off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. The spill was the largest in the province's history.
