West Texas Intermediate crude for July delivery lost 70 cents to $76.87 on the New York Merc, while Brent for July lost 54 cents to $81.36 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $12.50 to WTI, down from a discount of $12.10. Natural gas for June plunged 19 cents to $2.66. The TSX energy index lost 1.34 points to close at 293.69.
U.S. Bakken producer Enerplus Corp. (ERF) edged down three cents to $27.32 on 784,900 shares, despite announcing a farewell gift to shareholders: a 31.8765-cent special dividend. The payout comes as Enerplus prepares to close its $3.75-billion (U.S.) cash-and-share takeover by fellow Bakken producer Chord Energy Corp. (U.CHRD: $176.64). Chord's shareholders approved the arrangement last week, and Enerplus will ask its shareholders to do the same tomorrow, ahead of a planned closing date of May 31. The special dividend is intended to equalize the companies' existing quarterly dividends (given that Enerplus's is much smaller than Chord's). It is payable on June 4 to shareholders of record on May 30.
