West Texas Intermediate crude for August delivery lost 30 cents to $81.91 on the New York Merc, while Brent for September lost 18 cents to $84.85 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $13.50 to WTI, down from a discount of $13.40. Natural gas for August lost 17 cents to $2.16. The TSX energy index added 5.11 points to close at 290.79.
It was a quiet Monday in the oil patch, which is gearing up for the start of quarterly reporting season. The first seed will sprout today with PrairieSky Royalty Ltd. (PSK: $28.50), reporting its second quarter financials after the close. It is always an early bloomer. For the rest of the sector, the most fruitful period begins next week -- with reports on the way from Whitecap Resources Inc. (WCP: $10.32), Athabasca Oil Corp. (ATH: $5.41), MEG Energy Corp. (MEG: $29.39), Veren Inc. (VRN: $10.94), Headwater Exploration Inc. (HWX: $7.53) and others -- and continues into mid-August.
