West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery slid $2.02 to $67.67 on the New York Merc, while Brent for November lost $1.86 to $71.60 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $11.50 to WTI, up from a discount of $11.60 to WTI. Natural gas for October lost five cents to $2.58. The TSX energy index lost 8.06 points to close at 256.32.
Energy stocks tumbled with oil prices. Their early spring resurgence -- when oil prices shot up nearly $20 (U.S.) from mid-January through mid-April, sending the TSX energy index soaring 30 per cent -- is now but a fond memory. While most energy stocks are still clinging on to some of their earlier gains, others have now erased those gains and then some. Companies that hit 52-week lows today included Ovintiv Inc. (OVV), down $2.51 to $49.86, Baytex Energy Corp. (BTE), down 22 cents to $3.86, and Obsidian Energy Ltd. (OBE), down 27 cents to $7.51.
