West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery lost $2.34 to $68.04 on the New York Merc, while Brent for January lost $2.04 to $71.83 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $9.50 to WTI, up from a discount of $9.90. Natural gas for December shot up 26 cents to $2.92. The TSX energy index lost a fraction of a point to close at 276.32.
Robert Logan's oil sands producer, Greenfire Resources Ltd. (GFR), lost 50 cents to $10.15 on 15,000 shares. A 43-per-cent block of its shares has apparently changed hands. This morning, Adam Waterous's Waterous Energy Fund (WEF) announced that it has closed its previously announced acquisition of 29.9 million shares of Greenfire (out of 69.4 million outstanding) from selling shareholders for a cash total of $241.2-million (U.S.), or $8.05 (U.S.) a share. WEF noted that the closing comes after Greenfire's attempt to block the transaction by swallowing a poison pill was itself blocked by the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC).
