West Texas Intermediate crude for June delivery lost $1.63 to $60.42 on the New York Merc, while Brent for June lost $1.61 to $64.25 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $10.70 to WTI, up from a discount of $11.40. Natural gas for June added four cents to $3.38. The TSX energy index lost 1.98 points to close at 244.55.
Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party has won Canada's federal election. The former central banker, who campaigned on boosting Canadian economic prosperity and countering U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive trade war and "51st state" rhetoric, narrowly defeated populist rival and career politician Pierre Poilievre, whose Conservative party looked to be a shoo-in only a few months ago. (The abrupt reversal in Mr. Poilievre's political fortunes culminated in the loss of his own seat to Liberal challenger Bruce Fanjoy.) Instead of a once-anticipated Conservative majority blowout, the status quo of a Liberal minority government is set to continue.
