West Texas Intermediate crude for June delivery added 15 cents to $101.17 on the New York Merc, while Brent for July added nine cents to $105.72 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $21.50 to WTI, down from a discount of $19.60. Natural gas for June added three cents to $2.89. The TSX energy index added 4.93 points to close at 430.72.

The oil patch is counting down the hours until tomorrow, when (rumour has it) the federal and Alberta governments will shake hands on an industrial carbon pricing agreement aimed at clinching a so-called grand bargain to build a new West Coast pipeline. Speaking to reporters this morning, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that an "implementation agreement" on carbon has been struck by the governments, and is one of the steps to "advance a potential pipeline to transport at least one million barrels of low-emission Alberta oil a day to new markets." He and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will be in Calgary tomorrow to unveil details.
