West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery added $2.10 to $84.50, while Brent for October added $2.35 to $90.87, as U.S. President Donald Trump cast doubt on a potential peace deal with Iran (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $17.80 to WTI, up from a discount of $18.90. Natural gas for September lost four cents to $2.69. The TSX energy index added 8.98 points to close at 441.15.
Canadian gas producers heard a familiar tune as a fresh proposal arrived dangling the promise of a new route to international buyers -- this time with an eastward twist. An ambitious early-stage LNG (liquefied natural gas) proposal was unveiled today by the Quebec-indigenous-led Kino Aski Inc. and Norwegian energy firm Marinvest Energy. Using a "combination of existing and new pipeline infrastructure," they want to transport gas from Western Canada to a proposed LNG terminal in Quebec, capable of exporting 15 million tonnes a year to markets in Europe.
