West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery added $2.45 to $94.61, while Brent for November added $3.52 to $106.60, rising on U.S.-Iran tensions and a potential 90-day U.S. diesel export ban (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $26.70 to WTI, down from a discount of $26.60. Natural gas for October shot up 27 cents to $3.29. The TSX energy index added 2.01 points to close at 438.85.
The one-week countdown is on for Ottawa to decide whether to list the proposed one-million-barrel-a-day West Coast oil pipeline as a project of national interest. Oct. 1 was pinned as the target date for this designation in an implementation agreement signed last May by the federal government and Alberta. Speaking to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce earlier this week, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed confidence that the designation will be granted on time. "We're closer than ever to a new oil pipeline," she cheered, adding that she expects "an interim decision, sort of conditional approval by Oct. 1, with final approval by September" of next year.
