West Texas Intermediate crude for December delivery lost 78 cents to $102.00, while Brent for December lost 44 cents to $114.88 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $32.70 to WTI, up from a discount of $36.20. Natural gas for December (new front month) added 13 cents to $2.95. The TSX energy index lost 1.09 points to close at 485.37.

Oil prices eased on reports of fresh U.S. efforts to revive peace talks with Iran. The bill came mere months after Prime Minister Mark Carney and former B.C. premier David Eby signed an agreement in July that included a promise from Ottawa to maintain the ban "without alteration, suspension or narrowing of scope." The federal Conservatives nonetheless renewed their push for repeal this week, with party leader Pierre Poilievre calling the ban a "gigantic, multibillion-dollar gift" to the United States (a reference to the discounted price of Canadian oil, most of which is sold south of the border).
