Globe/wire say TSX falls as Trump's war persists

2026-09-01 09:08 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that U.S. and Canadian stocks weakened on Monday, with investors turning the page on a volatile month as a war-related jump in crude prices revived inflation fears and raised the likelihood of tighter monetary policy. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says spiking oil prices dampened investor risk appetite and sent benchmark U.S. Treasury yields higher, as investors processed Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish tone on Friday in his speech at the Jackson Hole symposium. Despite the broad sell-off, all three major U.S. stock indexes posted monthly gains. Nasdaq showed the largest percentage growth for August as the artificial-intelligence trade remained alive. The blue-chip Dow nabbed its fifth consecutive monthly advance. Toronto also posted a monthly advance, rising nearly 3 per cent. That was its fifth straight monthly gain. U.S. crude oil futures Monday settled 2.8 per cent higher at $85.76 (U.S.). The Dow fell 374.09 points to 53,185.90. The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended down 283.44 points at 36,270.48, its lowest closing level since Aug. 6. The materials group, which includes metal mining shares, was down 1.7 per cent. Gold hovered near a two-week low.
