Globe/wire say TSX ends flat as bond yields rise

2026-09-25 09:18 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that the S&P/TSX Composite Index ended marginally lower on Thursday -- down 44.97 points at 35,706.46 -- as uncertainty about the Middle East lifted oil prices and bond yields. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says stocks rebounded from session lows after reports U.S. and Iranian negotiators were exploring a phased path out of war that would involve Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz and Washington lifting its economic blockade. U.S. and Iranian leaders exchanged barbs this week at the UN General Assembly. Brent crude prices rose 3 per cent to nearly $107 (U.S.) a barrel after a Houthi missile attack on Saudi Arabia revived fears of supply disruptions. The U.S. 30-year Treasury bond yield reached its highest since 2004. The yield on the benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury climbed to 5.21 per cent by late afternoon, up 10 basis points and its highest since early this century. The Canadian 10-year yield was up about 5 basis points to near 4 per cent, its highest since 2023. In Toronto, shares of Kinross Gold shed 11.3 per cent after the miner lowered its production outlook. Gildan Activewear shares lost 11.7 per cent after TD Cowen slashed its target price on the stock.
