Globe/wire say TSX moves up as telcos enjoy rare surge

2026-10-14 08:31 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Nasdaq ended lower Tuesday, as chip stocks added to recent losses and investors parsed mixed quarterly results from Citigroup and other big U.S. banks. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says Toronto ended higher, with the telcos rebounding from a rough session on Friday. The PHLX chip index fell 0.23 per cent, down for a fifth straight session. Citigroup dipped 5.6 per cent and Goldman Sachs lost 0.2 per cent after both banks topped profit estimates. JPMorgan declined after posting a rare profit miss. Analysts on average see S&P 500 third-quarter earnings surging more than 30 per cent, fuelled largely by artificial-intelligence-related technology companies. Expectations of a strong earnings season have offset worries about the U.S. war with Iran, surging bond yields and inflation related to high oil prices. In Canada, the S&P/TSX Composite Index added 319.36 points to close at 35,983.98, with the telcos rallying 3 per cent after Canaccord analyst Aravinda Galappatthige downplayed the threat posed by SpaceX's satellite mobile services. He also upgraded BCE to a "buy" from "hold." The financials sector rose 1.3 per cent, while the energy sector led gainers.
