Globe/wire say TSX adds 227.33 points at 36,171

2026-10-28 09:18 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Canada's main stock index rose to a six-day high on Tuesday as Celestica's quarterly results impressed investors and higher gold prices gave metal mining shares a boost. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe says U.S. stocks also ended higher, helped by an AI-fuelled tech rally. The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended up 227.33 points at 36,171.49. Shares of Celestica jumped 11.9 per cent after the electronic equipment company's quarterly results beat estimates. Nasdaq led the gains on Wall Street. The buzz surrounding details of Anthropic's impending initial public offering helped boost chip stocks for the third consecutive session. Growing concerns over the viability of debt-financed spending amid rising borrowing costs have weighed on the artificial-intelligence trade this month. Gold rose 1.1 per cent as lower oil prices lent support, with market participants awaiting the Federal Reserve's policy decision on Wednesday for signals on the future path of U.S. interest rates. The Bank of Canada's latest interest rate decision is also due today, with investors expecting the first rate hike since July, 2023. Both industrials and financials were up 0.7 per cent in Toronto.
