New York spot gold jumped $35.40 to $3,055.90 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange added 2.36 points to 640.42 while the TSX gold index leapt 11.54 points to 452.70. The index is finally within hailing distance of its 2011 high of 455.38 points, back when gold had reached an at-the-time high of $1,896 an ounce -- U.S. dollars of course, not that it mattered much back then. Seabridge Gold Inc. (SEA) was strong today, as it rose 86 cents to $17.55 on 283,000 shares. So was Nexgold Mining Corp. (NEXG), which added 1.5 cents to 67.5 cents on 3.07 million shares. First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FM) led a small cadre of miners southward today -- most of which had a copper component -- as it fell 40 cents to $20.95 on 4.45 million shares.
Tara Christie's Banyan Gold Corp. (BYN) closed unchanged at 23 cents on 992,000 shares on word of the "mobilization of personnel and drills" to its AurMac project in central Yukon. The men and machines are on their way to start a 30,000-metre drill program that will seek to expand and better define both the Airstrip and Powerline deposits on the project. Some of that effort will go toward defining areas of higher-grade mineralization, especially near surface.
