New York spot gold rose $30.40 Friday to $3,446.50. The TSX Venture Exchange added 12.19 points to 829.57 while the TSX gold index gained 15.91 points to 609.68. Most gold miners gained ground on Canadian exchanges today. China Gold International Resources Corp. (CGG) jumped $2.01 to $20.04 on 75,000 shares, while Galiano Gold Inc. (GAU) rose eight cents to $2.97 on 5.28 million shares -- both making their moves in silence. Soma Gold Corp. (SOMA), on the other hand, fell 16 cents to $1.27 on 1.21 million shares on its second quarter report.
Speaking of second quarter reports, Jose Garcia's Silver X Mining Corp. (AGX) has sustained pretax profitability through its latest quarter. In other words, it posted a loss: The $145,000 (U.S.) in pretax profit morphed into a $79,000 (U.S.) loss once the accountants got to the bottom line. Even so, this was better than the first quarter and better than the first two quarters of 2024, but the market was nevertheless unimpressed.
