New York spot gold retreated $4.40 Thursday, pausing for its siesta at $3,634.80. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 8.24 points to 875.77 while the TSX gold index added 7.02 points to 672.09. Most Canadian gold miners took a breather from their bull run today, although SSR Mining Inc. (SSRM), which rose $1.01 to $31.46 on 741,000 shares, apparently did not receive the order to retreat. Among those pulling back were Thor Explorations Ltd. (THX), which lost four cents to $1.07 on 1.6 million shares, and Barrick Mining Corp. (ABX), which lost 23 cents to $40.69 on 9.79 million shares.
John Lewins's K92 Mining Inc. (KNT) rose 14 cents to $16.86 on 1.27 million shares on word of results from another 24 holes completed in its maiden surface drilling program at Arakompa, about 4.5 kilometres from the company's Kainantu processing plant in Papua New Guinea. The headline hits among the latest assays included a 96.1-metre intercept that graded 2.48 grams of gold and four grams of silver per tonne along with 0.07 per cent copper.
