New York spot gold fell $54.20 Monday, pausing at $4,484.10. The TSX Venture Exchange added 13.67 points to 1,025 while the TSX gold index fell 23.27 points to 856.95. Most precious metals miners lost ground today. GoGold Resources Inc. (GGD) fell seven cents to $3.40 on 3.74 million shares and Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (WPM) retreated $7.12 to $178.24 on 1.19 million shares today. Taseko Mines Ltd. (TKO) helped lead a modest contingent northward today, as it rose 71 cents to $10.96 on 2.13 million shares.

Endeavour Mining PLC (EDV) also moved lower, falling $4.68 to $81.71 on 1.38 million shares, but it had news. One of its civil engineering contractors died late last week in a heavy mining equipment incident. The mishap occurred during water drainage work at the Lafigue mine in Ivory Coast. There is no break in production at the operation -- not yet at least.

Paul Andre Huet's Americas Gold and Silver Corp. (USA) rose 12 cents to $8.64 on 1.78 million shares on new assays from its Cosala complex in Mexico. The headline hit, from the San Rafael Upper zone, returned 600 grams of silver and 0.44 gram of gold per tonne, plus 0.83 per cent copper and modest amounts of zinc and lead, across a 14-metre interval. A second hole in the area did nearly as well across a 10-metre interval, while two holes into the 120 Lower zone and one into the 120 Upper zone also warranted an extra helping of bold black ink.
