West Texas Intermediate crude for May delivery added $4.16 to $94.48 on the New York Merc, while Brent for May added $5.79 to $108.01 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $20.15 to WTI, down from a discount of $14.10. Natural gas for April added four cents to $2.99. The TSX energy index lost a fraction of a point to close at 417.38.

Oil had another turbulent day as traders tried to parse contradictory signals about negotiations to end the U.S.-Israel-Iran war in the Middle East. Following Iran's rejection of what it called a "one-sided and unfair" U.S. ceasefire proposal, U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran must "join a new path forward" or "we'll just keep blowing them away." He then implied that a deal might not be possible, stating, "I don't know if we'll be able to do that." Nevertheless, Iran is desperate for peace and "very substantial talks" are in progress, he insisted again -- claims Tehran has repeatedly contradicted.
