West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery added $3.44 to $101.41, while Brent for December added $3.94 to $105.92 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $29.30 to WTI, up from a discount of $29.90. Natural gas for November lost 12 cents to $3.11. The TSX energy index added 13.17 points to close at 490.02.
Oil prices notched yet another weekly gain. WTI has been up for seven of the past 10 weeks -- eight out of 10 for Brent. TSX energy stocks have been enjoying the ride, with several of them crossing or approaching eye-catching price milestones. Suncor Energy Inc. (SU: $110.25) saw its shares top $100 for the first time last week, while Ovintiv Inc. (OVV: $98.00) is currently sniffing around triple digit territory itself, and Whitecap Resources Inc. (WCP: $20.17) made its very first trip above $20 today.
The gains come as the oil patch prepares to report what one prominent energy investor has dubbed "epic" third quarter financials. Ninepoint Partners' Eric Nuttall told the Calgary Herald that oil producers are "generating just an epic level of free cash flow," to the point that some face a happy problem: potentially reaching debt-free status as early as 2027 and then having to figure out what else to do with their windfall. Mr. Nuttall expects the answer will be a combination of increased share buybacks and accelerated production ambitions. He and others will be watching the third quarter results closely for news or clues about next year's spending plans. The above Whitecap will be among the first to report, announcing today that it will release its financials on Oct. 28.
