The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, April 3, edition that about 40 countries met Thursday to discuss reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing Iran's blockade, which Britain claims is damaging the global economy. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper, who chaired the virtual meeting, emphasized that Iran's actions are affecting households and businesses worldwide. The meeting included representatives from France, Germany, Canada, the UAE and India. The discussions took place after Mr. Trump said on Wednesday evening that the strait could open "naturally" and it was the responsibility of countries that rely on the waterway to ensure it was open. European officials said that Thursday's meeting concentrated on identifying countries interested in joining the proposed coalition and exploring diplomatic and economic avenues to encourage Iran to open the strait. The meeting concluded without specific agreements, but officials agreed that Iran should not impose transit fees on ships, and all nations should have free access to the waterway. Military planners will meet next week to discuss options, including mine-clearing and a reassurance force for commercial shipping.
