The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the professional order overseeing engineering in Quebec is examining former SNC-Lavalin chief executive officer Jacques Lamarre's conduct, including allegations of his approval for purchasing a luxury yacht for Moammar Gadhafi's son. The Globe's Nicolas Van Praet writes that the disciplinary council of L'Ordre des ingenieurs du Quebec began hearings to determine if Mr. Lamarre violated the organization's ethics code during his tenure of SNC, now known as Atkinsrealis Group, as CEO of SNC in the early 2000s. The hearings stem from an investigation by the Office of the Syndic, which filed a formal complaint against Mr. Lamarre. The Syndic's complaint includes 14 allegations related to SNC's business dealings in Libya and political financing in Montreal. Notably, it claims he either instructed the purchase of a $25-million yacht for Gadhafi's son, Saadi Gadhafi, or was unaware despite being CEO at the time. Mr. Lamarre denies the allegations. He has pleaded not guilty. Atkinsrealis has moved on from a corruption scandal that engulfed the company in crisis for several years and entangled officials at the highest levels of government. The echoes, however, remain.
