The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that investor and business groups are redoubling their efforts on indigenous reconciliation. The Globe's Rita Trichur writes that the Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE), the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) and the National Aboriginal Trust Officers Association are aiming to persuade 25 per cent of all companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange to voluntarily adopt plans for the cause. Businesses face a choice. While the 25-per-cent target may seem ambitious, it is entirely achievable. Thirty-five per cent of companies on the S&P/TSX 60 Index and 25 per cent of financial sector companies on the S&P/TSX Composite Index already have either a corporate reconciliation action plan or are enrolled in the CCIB's Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations program. The PAIR program offers a phased process that helps companies build a comprehensive indigenous-relations strategy. Bank of Montreal, AtkinsRealis and Suncor Energy are among the participants. Ms. Trichur says the 25-per-cent target was not selected at random, but because research suggests that percentage is the "tipping point" to create widespread change.
