Globe says Scotiabank's Holt sees Carney delay budget

2025-05-16 06:55 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney's government is promising a "substantive" early-fall economic statement amid criticism over indications the Liberals will not table a federal budget until 2026. The Globe's Bill Curry writes that after the re-elected Liberal government's first cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said his focus is on presenting a fall update as the next public accounting of federal finances. An economic statement can be a simple update of Ottawa's bottom line or it can also include new policy measures. Mr. Champagne's office said the fall economic statement will be "substantive." The House of Commons is scheduled return in mid-September and that will give the government more time to assess the economic impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian imports. Bank of Nova Scotia economist Derek Holt said in a research note that while Parliament can still approve spending though stand-alone votes, "I still don't like this one bit." He added, "Canadians have a right to know the state of the government's finances -- like how bad are they now -- and the planned consequences to deficits and debt."
