The Financial Post reports in its Thursday, Nov. 28, edition that Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce chief executive officer Victor Dodig says newcomers need support from all corners as "people are turning a little sour" on immigration.
The Post's Naimul Karim writes that Mr. Dodig said there is a "lot of illegal migration" going around in the world, but the people who legally come to Canada as international students, temporary foreign workers or permanent residents "play by the rules" and it is important to "treat them by the rules" going forward.
The son of a refugee said: "Immigrants are the lifeblood of our country. Immigrants come here with hopes and dreams. Immigrants don't want to come here to be demonized, and what we need to do is continue to work on supporting those immigrants so that they actually feel fully Canadian." Public support for newcomers has declined recently due to a rise in the population, mainly from international students and temporary workers classified as temporary residents. With vacancies declining and unemployment rising, Ottawa plans to reduce the number of temporary residents entering the country, aiming for a net decrease of one million in the next two years.
