Former CIBC World Markets Inc. employee Li Mei Zhou has filed a lawsuit against the firm in the Supreme Court of British Columbia over her firing, claiming that CIBC dismissed her from her $5-million-per-year job for no good reason. Ms. Zhou says that she was an exemplary employee who managed a book of business worth $845-million. CIBC damaged her reputation by telling regulators that she had been subject to disciplinary measures, she claims.

The allegations are contained in a notice of claim that Ms. Zhou (also known as Jenny Zhou) filed at the Vancouver courthouse on Dec. 16, 2024. The suit identifies Ms. Zhou, 55, as an investment adviser of 25 years who catered to "top tier clients." Many of those clients followed her when she moved to CIBC from another firm in 2012, the suit states.

According to the suit, Ms. Zhou was a top performer at CIBC and had a discipline-free record. As a result of her "extraordinary work ethic," Ms. Zhou earned over $5-million in each of 2021, 2022 and 2023, the suit states. Ms. Zhou also says that she was ranked second in Canada in a list of the top 100 women wealth advisers in 2023.
