The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Canadians are not typically known for public displays of patriotism, especially not at Costco. The Globe's Ann Hui writes that on any other day, the expansive freezer aisles and the aroma of hot dog water from the snack bar would feel worlds apart from the White House or Parliament Hill. However, this week, there was clear evidence of a significant issue weighing on the minds of Canadians throughout the Toronto big-box store. Costco customer
Michael Orr and his wife had decided to adopt a "Buy Canadian" approach due to his frustration with the U.S. actions and President Donald Trump's tariff threats. Although he has lived in the U.S. and identifies as pro-American, Mr. Orr finds the current situation intolerable.
The contradiction of shopping at Costco was not lost on him. Costco is an American company, headquartered in Washington State. And, as a symbol, Costco is about as synonymous with the American dream as it gets. "I did think, 'Should I be coming here?'" Mr. Orr said. Costco, he rationalized, supports Canadian jobs. As well, many of the products it carries are Canadian. The Globe says the trend to support Canada is not one likely to change any time soon.
