The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, July 6, edition that GFL Environmental is in talks with American private equity firm Apollo Global Management regarding a potential investment. The Globe's Tim Kiladze writes that GFL's board has formed a special committee to evaluate investment or takeover offers. Any complete takeover would likely depend on the support of chief executive officer Patrick Dovigi, who controls about 25 per cent of the voting power through his shares. Without his blessing, Apollo or a rival bidder may try to acquire GFL shares held by BC Partners and Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, GIC. BC Partners led GFL's 2018 recapitalization, and private equity firms typically hold their positions for five to seven years. GFL has been publicly traded on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges since March, 2020, with its share price doubling in the U.S. since the IPO. However, GFL's shares have struggled over the past year relative to its three main North American competitors. Apollo and GFL previously collaborated when GFL sold a majority stake in its environmental services division to Apollo and BC Partners in January 2025, generating $6.2 billion in cash, which helped reduce GFL's debt.
