Globe says Intact, rivals hear OTIP steering patients

The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, June 17, edition that Ontario teachers with specific chronic conditions are being informed they can only get their drugs from their insurance plan's in-house pharmacy. A triple-bylined item in The Globe reports that the move is meant to save money, but some argue that it inappropriately limits patient choice. The Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP) is practising patient steering, a tactic that has attracted attention since Manulife Financial and Shoppers Drug Mart's exclusivity deal earlier this year. The Ontario College of Pharmacists plans to address the OTIP deal at its July 8 board meeting. This is part of an effort to push back on patient restrictions and preferred pharmacy networks (PPNs). The meeting had been postponed due to a controversy involving a board member's involvement in a lawsuit against Shoppers. OTIP collaborated with a private company called Cubic Health to establish the in-house pharmacy, named MemberRx, in May. While teachers covered by OTIP can fill most of their prescriptions at the pharmacy of their choice, those with certain chronic conditions are only covered if their prescriptions are filled by MemberRx.
