The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Alberta's grid operator is imposing an interim limit on electricity supply for new data centres due to a surge in power requests from developers. The Globe's Joe Castaldo writes that the Alberta Electric System Operator will allocate 1,200 megawatts for large-load projects until 2028. However, 29 data-centre projects are requesting over 16,000 megawatts, exceeding the province's peak consumption. This limitation could hinder plans to attract energy-intensive infrastructure for artificial intelligence applications. AESO chief Aaron Engen stated that Alberta cannot connect all the electricity demands. He emphasized that the electricity cap is essential for maintaining grid stability. The allocation, under 10 per cent of total demand, still permits upcoming projects. Alberta's United Conservative government announced a strategy in December to attract data-centre operators in light of the global AI boom, leveraging the province's abundant natural gas for electricity generation. Technology and Innovation Minister Nate Glubish mentioned attracting hyperscale customers, which refers to major tech companies like Google and Meta that are key developers and users of AI.
