The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Jan. 23, edition that Ottawa's upcoming on-line harms and privacy bills should regulate artificial intelligence by requiring platforms to label AI-generated photos and videos, according to the government's AI strategy task force. The Globe's Marie Woolf writes that federal AI Minister Evan Solomon is set to release a government AI strategy next month. After appointing an expert task force last year, members have advised him to implement measures to protect children under 18 from potential harm caused by AI models, like chatbots. The task force said on-line platforms should inform consumers when content is AI-generated. It also said photos and videos generated by AI should include a digital watermark to help people differentiate between genuine images and those created artificially. It expressed concern that AI chatbots have the potential to cause significant harm. Some have encouraged desperate young people to hide eating disorders and to end their own lives. The task force said that while AI tools can enhance creativity, facilitate learning, and aid interaction and self-expression, they also can pose significant risks, including to children.
