FP/wire say Microsoft facing its worst month since 2000

2026-06-30 09:21 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, June 30, edition that Microsoft shares are facing their worst month since the dot-com era. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Cresset Wealth Advisors analyst Jack Ablin says: "Microsoft is getting hit on two sides with worries about both AI spending and AI disruption. While it looks like a pretty good deal with the valuation so low, I'm getting the sense that investors are shooting first and asking questions later." Microsoft's slump is due to investor caution over several trends. Despite heavy investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure and products, there are concerns that this technology may reduce demand for traditional software. Mr. Ablin says: "Whether Microsoft Word or Excel will be rendered obsolete by AI remains to be seen. But the spending is certainly a concern, especially since so many are going to the bond market to borrow, suggesting their cash piles won't be enough to sustain the build out." Microsoft is currently valued at its lowest in a decade, trading at 19 times projected profits, which is a rare discount compared with the S&P 500 at 20 times and significantly below its 10-year average of 27.
