The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, July 18, edition that sources say Meta is in talks to rent computing power from its artificial intelligence data centres to Anthropic, potentially worth up to $10-billion over two years, signalling a new AI business direction for Meta (all figures U.S.). A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that Anthropic proposed a deal to Meta in June, which is currently under consideration. While details are still being finalized, Anthropic would make monthly payments to Meta over two years, with both companies able to opt out early. Anthropic's proposal to Meta was about one-third the size of its recent $45-billion deal with SpaceX, which lasts three years and includes monthly payments of $1.25-billion for computing power. Both agreements allow for early termination. Meta's discussions with Anthropic may not lead to a deal. Anthropic and Meta declined to comment. Leading AI companies, including Meta, Google and Microsoft, are investing heavily in new data centres worldwide to gain more computing power for rapid technology development. This construction boom has significantly increased spending and raised concerns on Wall Street about the justification of such large investments.
