The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that a United States law firm is filing 30 lawsuits against Microsoft-backed OpenAI on behalf of Tumbler Ridge mass shooting survivors, claiming it was negligent for not reporting the shooter's chat history to the police to help prevent the attack. The Globe's Jesse Winter reports that three new lawsuits were filed Wednesday in federal court in California against OpenAI chief Sam Altman, alleging the company has a double standard on safety. The lawsuits claim OpenAI alerted police about threats to its staff but allegedly withheld information regarding the Tumbler Ridge shooter's violent chat history. The suits also claim ChatGPT was allowed to engage in violent chats to boost user interaction, facilitating discussions that helped the shooter plan her attack. The 30 new lawsuits add to seven others launched in April on behalf of victims who were killed. The new lawsuits claim OpenAI knew the shooter posed a significant threat, but allegedly avoided alerting police before the attack because doing so would force the company to create an internal system for reporting other violent users to the authorities. The allegations have not been proven in court.
