The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that B.C. Attorney-General Niki Sharma expressed concern over a report showing the Tumbler Ridge shooter received tactical advice from ChatGPT on maximizing harm and circumventing Microsoft-backed OpenAI's safeguards. The Globe's Joe Castaldo writes that Ms. Sharma was shaking with anger as she read the revelations about the shooter's ChatGPT conversations in a new report from American news outlet Mother Jones. "This is far worse than we thought it was going to be, although I already imagined it to be pretty bad -- there needs to be accountability for this," she says, adding that provincial lawyers had asked OpenAI to hand over the chat logs earlier this year and were rebuffed. "It's shocking that this technology is out there." On Monday, Ms. Sharma announced that the province is suing OpenAI and chief executive officer Sam Altman in California for failing to alert authorities about a shooter's violent plot and for creating an unsafe product. The province intends to use any recovered funds to build a new school after the old one was demolished. She wants Ottawa to amend the Criminal Code to require companies to prevent their products from aiding criminal behavior.
