The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Aug. 12, edition that National Bank of Canada has appointed a former top general from the Afghanistan combat mission as a strategic defence adviser, marking its efforts to expand into the often-overlooked defence financing sector. The Globe's Stefanie Marotta writes that retired general Rick Hillier will assist with National Bank's efforts to grow its client base in the defence and security industry, as well as among dual-use companies. Canada's banks aim to enhance financing for the defense sector, but face challenges with compliance and contract acquisition. Mr. Hillier will advise on trends in the defence sector and provide insights on issues affecting Canada's resilience, security, advanced manufacturing, aerospace and defence industrial base. He served over 35 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and was chief of the defence staff from 2005 to 2008, leading major domestic and international missions, including NATO operations. Since retiring from military service, he has advised on public initiatives, including Ontario's COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force in 2020. He recently served on the board of the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank.
