The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Canada can gain some insights from U.S. President Donald Trump's ineptitude at negotiations. Guest columnist Peter Jones writes that after over a century of being an ally, it seems only Mr. Trump's current desires matter. Making concessions to build trust is futile; he will simply demand more. As long as he is in power, we must stop seeing America as a friendly negotiator focused on strengthening our relationship. Mr. Trump respects only power. Canada has leverage, however, through energy, potash, critical minerals, wood, security co-operation and our market size as the top buyer of American goods. We don't need to bluster. Quiet but firm action will show our strength. Incredible as it may seem, Mr. Trump may not even know what he wants. Aside from selective trade imbalances and a few things like supply management in dairy, he is all over the place. If we hold out, his pain will grow to the point that he will take what's on the table and declare victory, as long as he can show his base that he was a tough guy on a few issues. We need to know what we want and have the patience to let Mr. Trump come to us as his position weakens. And it will, says Mr. Jones.
