The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Eli Lilly & Co. has raised prices of its diabetes and anti-obesity drugs in Canada and sharply increased prices in Britain to align with other European markets. The Globe's Chris Hannay writes that this decision comes in response to pressure from the Trump administration to lower U.S. prices and adjust them globally, making Lilly one of the first companies to act on this directive. Lilly said Thursday that it supports the administration's goal of maintaining the U.S. as the top destination for biopharmaceutical research and manufacturing, advocating for a fairer sharing of medical research costs among developed countries. Lilly added that achieving this may require higher medicine prices in markets like Europe to reduce them in the U.S. Lilly is raising the list price in Britain for Mounjaro, its type 2 diabetes treatment, by 170 per cent, Reuters reported. The weight-loss drug market has rapidly expanded, driven by Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy, prescribed for diabetes and obesity. Drug prices in the U.S. are, on average, more than three times those in Canada. Mr. Trump has repeatedly mentioned that statistic as he admonishes drug companies for their prices.
