The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, May 28, edition that the Coalition for Responsible Energy has filed an appeal against the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), claiming it fails to collect sufficient funds from oil and gas companies for cleaning up orphan wells. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that a group called the Coalition for Responsible Energy has submitted two appeals: a regulatory appeal and a rarely used reconsideration request for the cleanup fund amount. If the AER does not respond, they plan to pursue legal action in the Alberta Court of Appeal. Dwight Popowich's 75-acre farm near Two Hills was drilled in 2008, with production ending in 2012. In 2018, the driller abandoned over 3,000 wells and pipelines. On Jan. 30, the AER directed the Orphan Well Association to take control of the company's assets. Mr. Popowich said Tuesday: "They walked away from cleaning up the well on my land and many others. We don't know if it's safe or leaking. Farmers and landowners in Alberta trusted oil and gas companies to clean up these wells, but many have betrayed us and shifted their clean-up responsibilities onto others." The group wants the AER to raise the levy to fund the cleanup of OWA-responsible sites.
