The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Jan. 3, edition that Canada's 100 highest-paid chief executive officers earned an average of $13.2-million in 2023, according to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that this marks the third highest year since tracking began in 2007, although it is a decline from the record-breaking years of 2021 and 2022. Factors contributing to this decline include lower profits and wage gains for workers due to inflation. By 10:54 a.m. on Jan. 2, the CCPA calculates that the average CEO had made $62,661 -- equal to the average annual income of a Canadian worker. The gap between the top CEOs and regular workers has widened significantly, with CEOs earning 210 times more than average workers in 2023, compared with 104 times more in 1998. The highest-paid Canadian CEO in 2023 was Patrick Dovigi of GFL Environmental, whose total compensation was $68.5-million. He was followed by Joshua Kobza of Restaurant Brands International at $39.1-million, then R.M. Kruger of Suncor Energy at $36.8-million. The report recommends a "wealth tax" on Canadians worth more than $10-million, which it says could raise $32-billion a year.
