The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, July 29, edition that auto theft in Canada is declining due to joint efforts against theft, according to Equite Association (EA). A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that EA revealed that vehicle thefts dropped 19.1 per cent in the first half of 2025 compared with 2024, with just over 23,000 stolen vehicles reported. Ontario and Quebec saw significant reductions of 25.9 per cent and 22.2 per cent. The year-over-year drops are more modest in Atlantic Canada and Western Canada at about 9 per cent. Alberta saw a decline of 12.5 per cent. EA national vice-president of investigative services Bryan Gast credits greater public awareness of the threat and efforts by various levels of government and law-enforcement agencies to collectively tackle the problem.
"It's really definitely a collaborative effort." EA noted that vehicle recovery rates increased by 3.4 percentage points year-over-year to 56.5 per cent in the first half of 2025, approaching the 2021 precrisis level of 57.2 per cent. However, the Insurance Bureau of Canada cautioned that vehicle theft remains a significant concern and is not the sole factor driving up auto insurance costs.
