The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Darren Entwistle arrived in Vancouver from Britain in 2000, when the Internet and cellphones were still vaguely exotic. The Globe's Irene Galea writes that year he became the chief executive officer of a telephone company that had recently brought together BC Tel and a company holding the government of Alberta's telecom assets. Now, Telus is a technology titan with a presence in more than 45 countries worldwide. "It's not like you can do a surgical cut," he told The Globe in the days leading up to July 1, his official retirement date. "There's a bit of a ripping aspect." Now 63, he stressed that he feels prepared to exit, describing himself as "chronologically" ready. It's not that he had his "fingernails stuck into the board table at Telus," as he puts it, though he admits that he was, perhaps, a little "risk averse" when it came to choosing his successor. With Victor Dodig now in place, Mr. Entwistle will step down after one of the great runs of corporate leadership in Canada. Over his tenure, Mr. Entwistle grew Telus into an international tech powerhouse, building a reputation as an intense man who is passionate about business, volunteering and health care.
