The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Ryan Bushell at Toronto's Newhaven Asset Management is keeping the faith in Telus. The Globe's Brenda Bouw writes that
the Vancouver telco is a stock his firm has held for several years and has been adding to recently, after the stock dropped following a larger-than-expected dividend cut.
The company also lowered its guidance for the year under new chief executive officer Victor Dodig, who officially took over the job on July 1 after joining the board in May, 2022. "In my career to date, I've seen very few people who can turn around a company the size of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce [at which Mr. Dodig was CEO from 2014 until 2025]," Mr. Bushell told The Globe. "Of course, I'm a little frustrated that Telus cut the dividend as much as it did, but I understand why it happened.
To us, Telus is a company that's essentially in an oligopoly -- it doesn't have a ton of competition -- and supplies infrastructure that's not going to be disrupted. I'm excited about the opportunity.
Given the new management team it has, how can you not buy more at these levels? We may even double our position to 5 per cent from 2.5 per cent in the near term."
