Globe says CIBC, rivals hear BOC independence critical

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Aug. 22, edition that politicians should be cautious not to undermine confidence in the Bank of Canada. A Globe editorial says maintaining low and stable inflation relies on ensuring that people have faith in the BOC's ability to take necessary actions. The Globe says Canadian politicians should be mindful of this. While none have gone as far as Donald Trump in criticizing the central bank or casting doubt on its future independence, politicians from different political backgrounds have been pushing the boundaries. Last year, several premiers urged Governor Tiff Macklem to refrain from raising interest rates. This year, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who actually holds the power to influence the central bank's decisions, openly supported rate cuts. Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre, the most vocal critic of the BOC, has pledged to replace Mr. Macklem and advocated for increased Parliamentary oversight of the central bank. He has toned down his criticisms since becoming party leader in 2022. Hopefully, this more moderate approach will persist. In the case of Mr. Trump, central bank independence is in question. Canada should avoid heading down that path.
