Globe says TD's Yang ponders MSCI equal weight ETFs

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that you're out of luck if you're looking for a Canadian-listed exchange-traded fund that tracks the MSCI World Equal Weight Index. The Globe's Andrew Galbraith writes there are some other options. First, consider what this ETF would actually do and why the approach may make sense. Casey Yang, director of ETF sales and strategy at TD Securities, said Canadians looking specifically for an equal-weight global ETF could check out Invesco's European-listed MSCI World Equal Weight UCITS ETF (MWEQ). Ms. Yang added, however, that it's not easily accessible in Canada. In the United States, Cambria Global EW ETF (GEW) takes an equal-weight approach but isn't specifically tied to the MSCI index. Ms. Yang said the lack of an equally weighted global Canadian ETF is likely related to weak demand and the complexity of implementing it. "Equal-weight strategies require regular rebalancing and higher trading activity than traditional cap-weighted funds, particularly when managing more than 1,000 stocks across multiple international markets," she said. Another option is the Avantis CIBC All-Equity Asset Allocation ETF (CAGE), which offers broad geographic exposure with emerging markets.
