The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, June 13, edition that the artificial intelligence boom is transforming the U.S. economy. The Globe's Jason Kirby writes that last year, U.S. imports of processors and servers from Mexico reached $90-billion (U.S.), and that figure is expected to double this year. Four major tech companies plan to invest $650-billion (U.S.) this year, nearly matching total private sector spending on nonresidential structures in 2025. AI infrastructure is boosting economic growth in Mexico, not so much in Canada. While developers here have announced scores of new data centre projects over the last two years, sparking a growing public backlash, very few construction projects have commenced. Workers and businesses in Canada have been slow to adopt AI and invest in computing technology, contributing to a long-term pattern of underinvestment and productivity lag. This trend is evident in Canada's minimal engagement in securing AI-related equipment from overseas. Last year, about 30 per cent of U.S. GDP growth came from private investment in IT equipment and software, while in Canada, weaker tech spending contributed to only 5 per cent of economic growth in 2025 from AI-related capital investment.
