A New York Times dispatch to The Globe reports that their statement, titled We Must Act Now, was signed by nearly 200 people, including 15 Nobel Prize laureates and the chief economists of two of the leading AI labs, Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Anthropic. Other notable signatories include Jack Clark, a co-founder of Anthropic; Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive officer of Google; and Vinod Khosla, a prominent venture capitalist. Tech industry leaders warn that as AI advances, it could significantly displace human workers, causing joblessness. However, economists remain skeptical, suggesting that technological changes typically unfold more gradually than anticipated. Certain economists are worried that AI is spreading faster and more broadly than previous technologies, and that their profession is underestimating the risks. The recent statement reflects the growing prevalence of these concerns. It warns that the effects of AI could be "larger than the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding over a vastly shorter time frame."
